Our hearts and prayers are with those injured, and affected by such a terrible event. Take a little extra time to love those around you as you go about your days. Do you know what you are eating?
As obesity and diet related complications are on the rise, it is up to us to take our health into our own hands. Just because a food product says, "fat free," "sugar free," or "organic" doesn't always mean it is. In fact, products that say "sugar free" will have aspertame as a sugar substitute which happens to be a NEUROTOXIN! So educate yourself before your next trip to the grocery store by clicking the link below!

Health Tip: The Sun and Vitamin D3
Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone! Since the weather is changing, and we are starting to see that beautiful California sun of our once again, I decided it would be a perfect time to share a little information on vitamin D3. Did you know that your body actually uses the sun to convert and create vitamin D for your body to use? So get out to your nearest beach, enjoy a nice weekend barbeque, and soak up those rays (in moderation of course)!
Here's a great article by Dr. Dan Murphy with good information on vitamin D3. Enjoy!

Patient of the Week!

Tamra Araiza
Condition: Extreme Neck Pain, Headaches, and Fatigue
I first came to the Cripe Upper Cervical Center in complete desperation and exhaustion from a website that I found online. The past 5-6 years I have experienced cervical spinal stenosis accompanied by enormous pain, fatigue, headaches, and ultimately depression. My prior treatments before finding Dr. Cripe were extensive epidural injections, numerous botox injections to my neck and skull, cortisone injections, acupuncture, traditional chiropractic adjustments, all accompanied by numerous pain medications. Being a mother of two boys and a wife, I had reached my wits end and was about to accept that my “lack of a quality life” was going to be how I spend the rest of my life.
Amazingly, after a lot of suffering, my life of quality marriage with my husband of 15 years and my renewed spirit to mother my children and be “present” has been a gift from Dr. Brian. This was my last hope for a pain free or even a more manageable life. The pain medications are all gone, no more injections, and a good nights sleep has been restored.
Please, please, please, tell everyone you know who has or is suffering pain to not give up hope and see Dr. Brian. Miracles do happen! I am living proof!
Blessings and thanks!

How Soft Drinks Impact Your Health
Fast Facts:
Sugar Overload!
Twenty minutes after drinking soda, your blood sugar spikes causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning the sugar into fat.
Obesity
The relationship between soft drink consumption and body weight is so strong that researchers calculate that for each additional soda consumed, the risk of obesity increases 1.6 times.
-70% of cardiovascular disease is related to obestiy
-42% of breast and colon cancer is related to obesity
-30% of gallbladder surgery is related to obesity
Osteoperosis
Soft drinks contain phosphoric acid, and a high phosphate diet has been associated with bone breakdown and an increased risk of osteoperosis. When phosphorus is excreted in the urine it takes calcium with it depriving your bones as well as the rest of your body.

Congratulations Dr. Brian for becoming part one certified!!!
To ensure the utmost accuracy and precision the NUCCA organization has implemented an in depth and rigorous board certification program. So rigorous, in fact, that there are only 20 doctors(one doctor being our very own Dr. Glenn Cripe) in the world who have attained this goal. Congratulations to Dr. Brian for passing the first part of NUCCA certification!

When to Use Ice or Heat
This question has appeared to be an ongoing debate that possesses an answer which will occasionally vary from person to person. We here at the Cripe Upper Cervical Center feel that ice is best utilized in acute injuries (within 1 to 5 days) where heat is beneficial in the chronic healing period (1 week and further). Ice will cause the blood vessels in the area to contract decreasing blood flow to the injured area thus limiting the amount of inflammation. It is important to control the inflammation to the area to prevent further damage to the tissues. Once the inflammation has decreased heat will play an important role in allowing the blood vessels to expand and the protective muscles spasms to relax. This will allow the blood to fully return the area and begin repairing the tissues that have been damaged. When in doubt use ice after an immediate injury.

How to maintain your correction
It is our desire at the Cripe Upper Cervical Center to see you holding your adjustments longer, thus keeping you out of the office for longer periods of time living the pain free life you deserve. Here are a few tips to maintain your correction.
-Head Position: Try not to put your head back in extension (looking up) or move your head to your shoulder ( ie talking on cell phones, stretching your neck)
-Sleep on your back or side: If you sleep on your side make sure your pillow is at a size and consistency that will allow your head to remain in neutral. A pillow that is too small are too big will leave your head in that ear to shoulder position for 8 hours a night!
-Do not crack your own neck: This simulates an accident trauma to your neck and will result in ligament laxity.
Following these simple tips will allow your head and neck to stabilize stronger than ever resulting in a longer lasting health and wellness!

MS, Parkinsons, and Chiropractic
Here are some interesting results on the effects of chiropractic on MS and Parkinsons. Both are diseases that specifically target the patients nervous system which can lead to global symptoms. As NUCCA practitioners it is our goal to re-align the head and neck thus freeing up the disruption in the nervous system. We are not specifically treating diseases such as MS and parkinsons, but your body possesses an immense potential to fight any disease when your nervous system is free of disruption. A balanced spine is integral in achieving complete health and wellness.

Health Tip: An efficient way to exercise
Let's face it...people dislike going to the gym and losing 2 hours of their precious couch time. So why do it? Working out for long periods of time makes us dislike working out, and can have damaging effects on the body. Try working out 5 days a week for no longer than 15-20 minutes a day. Pick a few exercises that you are comfortable with and do them at rigorous pace with fewer breaks. Use lighter weight and keep the intensity high as this gives you the cardio your body needs as well as the weight lifting. Consistency is key!!! Your body will respond rapidly, and you will have more time to rest and relax on your couch!

Health Tip: How to avoid Type 2 diabetes

We all know that too much sugar throughout your life will ultimately lead to diabetes but how? The American diet is known for containing large amounts of sugar, and Americans are know for consuming "larger than they should" portions of this American diet. This undoubtedly leads to sugar overload! Your body does possess multiple mechanisms for turning sugar into energy as well as storing it, but what happens when there is too much sugar and no more room in the liver storehouse?
The body reacts by attempting to decrease your sugar levels by excreting large amounts insulin into the blood stream. As we continue to consume more and more butterfingers the body will no longer be able to neutralize the sugar with insulin, and it will have no where else to store it. Some will get stored as fat, and the rest will begin to coat your blood making it thicker. At this point your hemoglobin (component of blood cell that carries oxygen) becomes glycosylated and will remain that way. This scenario leads to heart disease, eye problems, and an array of other disorders.
Avoid processed foods and look for alternatives to sweets. Fruits are a great way to go as they not only have a smaller amount of sugar but they contain antioxidants that aid in the processing and break down of sugar.

Happy eating!

Health Tip: Choosing Effective Vitamin C
Most people feel that every brand of vitamin C they purchase at a store is the same as the next. This is not always true! Make sure you purchase a brand of vitamin C that comes with riboflavin or a flavanoid compound. Without this cofactor your body will have difficulty absorbing the vitamin thus making it useless.

Cleveland Chiropractic class a success!
The doctors at Cripe Upper Cervical Center have been working very hard in preparing a weekend long seminar for the student body at Cleveland Chiropractic College. Dr. Brian participates in the Mariner's outreach clinic

This last Saturday, Mariner's church hosted a large scale outreach clinic on their campus that was geared toward providing basic medical examinations to low income families in their surrounding cities. Dr. Brian was on staff alongside other medical professionals that ranged in discipline from medical doctor to dentist. He said it was an amazing experience and encourages all comunities to reach out to those who are less fortunate. America is the 40th most healthy nation and the change must start with in our small communities. More importantly it must begin with those who don't have access to important health information and are unable to get under the care that they need.

Thank you!!!
It has been a very busy and fruitful time for us these past few weeks. I have truly been inspired by the tenacity, strength, and the underlying kindness of the human spirit. I feel blessed to be able to wake up every morning to come to a job where the air is rich with healing and the waiting room is full of smiling faces...each with their own story of success and healing. People who have lived on the farthest edge of suffering who's hopes have been lost, but have finally returned home to a life restored. To me its not a job but rather a priviledge.
It was so very nice to talk to those of you at our open house who shared such kindness and stories with me. It was so great to meet such nice new people and catch up with so many old friends. I would like to especially thank Glenn, Jeanne, and Christina for all their hard work in making the party as great as it was. Thank you all for coming to our open house and showing your support as I embark on this new adventure.
